CHARLESTON, SC (WCSC) - Two Charleston police officers pulled a woman from a burning car Sunday night following a two-car accident.

The crash happened shortly before 11 p.m. Sunday at Maybank Highway and Riverland Drive, according to Charleston Police spokesman Charles Francis.

Officers Jason DuFault and Michael Galka arrived at the scene, saw that one of the vehicles was on fire and realized the driver was belted in and unable to get out, Francis said.

When the damage prevented the officers from opening the doors of the vehicle, Galka used his baton to break the rear side passenger window and unlocked the door and both then helped her from the vehicle and moved her to a safe location.

EMS then transported her to MUSC for treatment, Francis said.

Police say the other driver died at the scene.

The cause of the accident is under investigation.
