DD2: 16-year-old accused of bringing gun to school

SUMMERVILLE, SC (WCSC) - A student at Ashley Ridge High School was taken into custody Thursday after administrators retrieved a gun from him, according to authorities.

The incident, involving a 16-year-old student, occurred Thursday at Ashley Ridge High School, Dorchester County School District 2 spokesperson Pat Raynor said.

A message to parents sent by the school's principal indicated the student had a "weapon," but Dorchester County Sheriff's Capt. Tony Phinney confirmed Friday morning the weapon in question was a gun.

The student, whose identity has not been released, was recently enrolled at the school in April, she said.

Raynor says law enforcement officers took the student into custody without incident and the district is recommending him for expulsion in accordance with district discipline policies, she said.
