No injuries following school bus fire on Highway 17 in Awendaw

CHARLESTON COUNTY, SC (WCSC) - Officials with the Charleston County Sheriff's Office say no one was injured following a school bus fire in Awendaw Tuesday afternoon.

Authorities say it happened on the 5500 block of Highway 17.

According to CCSO officials, the driver and students are unharmed, and all lanes are open.

CCSD officials said the bus driver noticed smoke coming from under the hood. According to school officials, the driver then pulled over and the two students were removed to safety.

Officials with Awendaw-McClellanville Consolidated Fire District say crews responded at 4:15 p.m. to N. Hwy 17 and Hunley Sullivan Road.

When crews arrived they saw a fully involved school bus.

"Crews began a fast attack to extinguish the fire, and prevent any exposure to the surrounding area," AMCFD officials said."No children were on the bus at the time of the fire".

The cause of the fire in under investigation.
