CHARLESTON, SC (WCSC) - The South Carolina Department of Public Safety is testing out evacuation plans during a full scale hurricane exercise Wednesday.

The exercise will test lane reversals plans for the state's major coastal areas. It's important to note, NO lanes will actually be reversed as part of the exercise. The exercise includes lane reversal plans for Interstate 26, U.S. 21, U.S. 278, U.S. 501 and S.C. 544 should an actual hurricane evacuation order be issued for the South Carolina coast.

Law enforcement personnel will be staged on I-26, from I-526 in Charleston to I-77 in Columbia. The troopers shouldn't impact traffic, but drivers are cautioned to be aware of their presence on the shoulders of the interstate and at exit ramps.

Aerial units from SLED, the Civil Air Patrol, the South Carolina National Guard, the South Carolina Department of Natural Resources and the South Carolina Forestry Commission will conduct aerial surveillance as part of the exercise.
