BERKELEY COUNTY, SC (WCSC) - Officials with Berkeley Electric Cooperative say more than 4,000 people are without power in the area of Seabrook and Johns Island.

Authorities say 4,168 customers are without power.

Town of Kiawah Island officials said residents who were affected by the power outage got their power back around 7:24 p.m.

According to town officials, at 4 p.m., the Berkeley Electric substation off Betsy Kerrison caught on fire due to a blown transformer.

"The fire has been extinguished and Berkeley Electric is working to restore power," Kiawah Island officials said.

Earlier in the afternoon, close to 5,000 customers were affected by the outage.
