FOLLY BEACH, SC (WCSC) - Locals and vacationers on Folly Beach watched the sun rise during the city's annual Sunrise Easter Service.
For some it was there first time coming out to the service, but it's this beautiful view and people's love for Jesus Christ that keeps people coming back.
It's become a tradition for families like Thomas and Donna Sawyer.
"We've been coming to the sunrise service every Easter," Thomas said. "It feels like you're closer to God when you're out here and you're amongst a lot of people that believe in the same thing that you do."
They say it's a joyous day and it's not only because it's their 40th wedding anniversary
"We believe that Christ has risen today, today is something to rejoice with friends and family it's a great thing," Thomas said.
Marilyn Clifford is in the sunrise community choir, a joining of Catholic, Baptist and Methodist Churches.
"The beach truly is God's chapel because everyone is welcome, you don't have to get hung up in denominations," Clifford said.
She says she's been apart of it for many years and it gets bigger every year.
"You can see a light bulb going off in people where they've heard something that awakens their soul." Clifford said. "We're all in this together, we might as well have fun and sing and be happy."
Happiness was radiating from families both near and far.
Edward Frazier keeps coming back with his family
"Pretty moving, to get up and enjoy," Frazier said. "He has risen."
Olivia Dietze also came to the pier with her family.
"My favorite song was the rise song, yeah that was my favorite song," she said.
For some their desire is for the message to reach beyond the pier.
"Today's message is hope and everyone should have hope on everything that's been happening in the world," Thomas said.
The sunrise service starts at 7 a.m. and takes place every Easter Sunday at the Folly Beach Pier.
