MOUNT PLEASANT, SC (WCSC) - The first day of a scheduled inspection of cables on the Ravenel Bridge caused backups in Mount Pleasant.

Live 5 Traffic Tracker showed "severe delays" of up to 21 minutes just before 3 p.m. Tuesday in the southbound lanes of Highway 17 leading onto the Ravenel Bridge and toward downtown Charleston.

An SCDOT camera at the Holiday Inn in Mount Pleasant shows the right lane blocked and slow-moving traffic in the left lane.

The right lanes on both sides of the Ravenel Bridge will be closed each day through Tuesday for the inspections.

The inspections, being made by the Infrastructure Corporation of America, are expected to end each day at 3 p.m.

Barricades, cones, signs and flashing arrows will be in the work zone during the inspections. Motorists are asked to use caution while driving through the area.
