Charleston basket brigade prepares thousands of Thanksgiving meals
CHARLESTON, SC (WCSC) - A local non-profit is feeding a lot of people in the Lowcountry this Thanksgiving.
The Charleston Basket Brigade is providing food to 3,500 families in the tri-county area so they can take part in the holiday on Thursday.
The effort is grassroots and claims 100 percent of the donations it receives go toward purchasing food.
Each meal is hand-assembled by volunteers at 7 a.m. Tuesday morning at the Charleston Area Convention Center.. The volunteers deliver the meals to the families in need, which are located with the help of a non-profit organization called Communities in Schools.
Each box includes a. turkey, cranberry sauce, stuffing, mashed potatoes, corn, green beans, sweet potatoes with marshmallows, fresh rolls, and a pumpkin pie. An anonymous letter inside the box reads, "This comes to you from someone who cares about you. All we ask is that you take care of yourself well enough to be able to do this for someone else one day."
