NORTH CHARLESTON (WCSC) - North Charleston Police arrested a man they say struck a parked, disabled vehicle then fled the scene on foot.
Osvaldo Zapata-Ruiz is charged with DUI and driving without a driver's license, according to North Charleston Police spokesman Spencer Pryor. An earlier version of this story identified Zapata-Ruiz as Ricardo Zapata-Campos, based on information supplied by the North Charleston Police Department on Saturday.
Police responded at approximately 3:07 a.m. to a reported vehicle collision on I-526 West near the International Boulevard Exit that caused both vehicles to catch on fire.
North Charleston Fire and EMS also responded, reporting that both vehicles were engulfed but that both vehicles were unoccupied.
Investigators determined that Zapata-Ruiz struck a disabled, parked vehicle on the side of I-526, then fled the scene on foot, Pryor said.
Charleston County deputies located him in the parking lot of a hotel and was arrested, Pryor said.
Traffic on I-526 Westbound was blocked from roughly 3:03 a.m. until 4 a.m., police said.
Jail records state a judge set bond for Zapata-Ruiz at $232.50 for the driving without a license charge and for $2,262 for the DUI charge. He was being held at the Al Cannon Detention Center.
