BERKELEY COUNTY, SC (WCSC) - The Berkeley County Sheriff's Office says you may be getting a phone call that appears to be from one of its deputies, but it won't be a real deputy on the other end of the line.
The Sheriff's Office posted a message to its Facebook page saying scammers are calling and claiming to be BCSO spokesman Mike Cochran.
Cochran says they got a call at the sheriff's office Tuesday reporting the scam. It involves someone claiming to be Cochran saying you missed jury duty and may have a warrant out for your arrest.
The scammers want your money and will typically ask for the numbers from prepaid credit cards. Cochran says the scammers are more sophisticated now - thanks to phone spoofing - and the use of real law enforcement names and positions.
The sheriff's office won't call and demand payment. If you answer one of these calls --- Hang up and call the local courthouse or the sheriff's office directly to just to be sure.
