CHARLESTON, SC (WCSC) - Who are the state's top-paid people? A look at the highest-dollar salaries in state agencies reveals 1,078 people make more than $150,000.
University doctors and professors make top-dollar throughout the list, but the real cash is in college sports.
The top twelve overall spots all go to the University of South Carolina. All but three of those are in the Athletic Department. No surprise, Will Muschamp is at the top of the list with a starting school salary $1.1 million to coach the USC football team. He's followed by the USC women's basketball coach Dawn Staley, who makes $650,000.
Next is the USC men's basketball coach Frank Martin at $550,000. Clemson's Dabo Swinney is later on the list with $245,000.
But don't let those salary numbers confuse you; college coaches make plenty more from boosters and bonuses!
The top non-college and university pay is in the SC Retirement System Investment Commission with positions making up to $300,000.
Another high-paying position? Psychiatrists. They are paid up to $275,000 in the Departments of Corrections, Mental Health and Social Services.
State agency heads, attorneys and directors make up to $214,000.
Many of these jobs require highly-specialized and educated people who could possibly make even more in the private sector.
