CHARLESTON, SC - The Citadel football team held its first scrimmage of the preseason Saturday morning inside Johnson Hagood Stadium. A rain shower rolled through the area right before the start of practice, but the sun was shining bright throughout the scrimmage.
"It was sloppy. We still have a long way to go," said head coach Brent Thompson. "I thought the defense did some really good things and played extremely hard. We just didn't drive the ball enough on offense."
The defense set the tone early as they forced a three-and-out on the first series of the scrimmage. Brandon Rainey picked up a first down on the second series by scrambling and picking up 12 yards on a third down play.
A few series later, the offense was driving after Rainey connected with Dexter Freeman for a 29-yard completion. The drive would stall from there after Shawn McCord got into the backfield and made a play on third down.
The offense finally got a big play when Raleigh Webb took the pitch and went around the right side for a 58-yard touchdown run.
During the overtime portion of the scrimmage, the first-team defense surrendered some yards, but made a play near the goal line to force a short field goal.
The second-team offense was able to reach the end zone on their drive as Rainey rolled left and hit Cameron Roberts across the middle for a nine-yard touchdown.
Defensive lineman Joseph Randolph, II spent a lot of time in the offensive backfield as he finished the day with a pair of sacks.
The Bulldogs will be off from practice on Sunday before returning to the practice field Monday morning.
