CHARLESTON COUNTY, SC (WCSC) - Nine days after the state Department of Health and Environmental Control ordered a part of Savannah Highway to be closed because of petroleum on the roadway, the lane has re-opened.

A DHEC spokesperson said recent rainfall pushed petroleum up through the asphalt of Savannah Highway at Highway 162 in Ravenel.

The right lane of the southbound lanes was closed on August 5th, according to the state Department of Transportation. It re-opened on Tuesday evening.

"DHEC is coordinating with the responsible party to investigate the source of the petroleum and to ensure it is cleaned up properly," DHEC spokesperson Erica Knight said in an e-mail message.
