CHARLESTON, SC (WCSC) - Charleston Police are investigating an accident between a motorist and a cyclist early Saturday morning.

The accident occurred at approximately 5:20 a.m., according to Charleston Police spokesman Charles Francis.

Police said a pick-up truck was traveling north on Highway 7 at Sam Rittenberg Boulevard when he struck a cyclist, who was also traveling north on Highway 7.

The cyclist was thrown off the bicycle and into the southbound lane of Highway 7. He was then run over by a Republic Services garbage truck.

The cyclist was pronounced dead at the scene, Francis said.

Police said the cyclist was illegally in the roadway when he was struck by the pick-up truck.

No charges have been filed against either driver; the accident is under investigation.

The identity of the cyclist has not yet been released.
