CCSD hiring legal firm to investigate handling of child porn case

CHARLESTON, SC (WCSC) - After a series of reports from Live 5 Investigates, the Charleston County School district says it plans to hire an independent legal firm to investigate how a former employee was handled while under criminal investigation.

Marvin Gethers was arrested in 2016, almost two years after CCSD reported him to police for possibly having child pornography on his school-issued laptop.

While the criminal investigation was underway, we found out Gethers was allowed to continue working with children at Dunston Elementary in North Charleston.

He was promoted later in 2014 and named Classified Employee of the Year in 2015. That recognition came with use of district vehicle.

Gethers was charged and arrested in 2016 in connection with the child pornography.

He was later re-arrested and further charged after two students independently came forward alleging Gethers had molested them.

Marvin Gethers died in 2017, but our investigation sparked questions about why he wasn't put on fired or suspended while police investigated from 2014 to 2016. We've asked repeatedly who was responsible for making that decision.

CCSD maintains leaders with knowledge of the situation from 2014 are no longer in the district.

The district released the following statement:

First, this matter is of utmost concern to CCSD. However, the issue is complicated by fact that the decision-making CCSD leaders with knowledge of the situation from 2014 are no longer employees of CCSD. The matter also involves law enforcement, and we would like to reinforce that the current CCSD administration took swift action to terminate the employee as soon as leadership staff was made aware of the situation in 2016.

Additionally, if this incident were to occur today, we would like to affirm that the current CCSD administration's position is that immediate termination would follow the discovery that any pornography was accessed on CCSD equipment.

Lastly, we understand that there are questions that simply cannot be answered by CCSD's current administration and for that reason we have contracted with an independent legal firm to fully investigate this matter and to attempt to respond to lingering questions for current leadership, staff members and the public.
