CHARLESTON, SC (WCSC) - Here in South Carolina, we were spared the worst of the storm, but in North Carolina, Hurricane Florence has unleashed its fury.

Live 5 News is teaming up with the Red Cross to help our neighbors to the north with the "Carolina Strong" disaster relief telethon.

As of Monday night, more than 11,700 people sought refuge in 114 Red Cross and community shelters because of the hurricane. This included approximately 11,500 people in 105 North Carolina shelters and 284 people in 9 shelters in South Carolina.

The Red Cross has also served more than 178,200 meals and snacks to those in need because of the storm. More than 3,100 Red Cross disaster workers from all over the country have been mobilized to help shelter, feed and support people affected by Florence.

Those who wish to donate to the Red Cross can call 843-402-5566 between 12 p.m. and 8 p.m. on Tuesday.
