COLLETON COUNTY, S.C. (WCSC) - The Colleton County coroner has identified a Charleston County man as the victim of a fatal single-vehicle collision that happened just outside of Walterboro.

José Guadalupe Martinez, 24, of Ladson died from injuries he sustained in the crash.

Troopers say the crash happened Monday just after 8:20 p.m.

Officials say a 2021 Toyota Sedan was traveling south on Jefferies Highway near Longleaf Drive, about half a mile north of Walterboro at a high rate of speed.

The car ran off the right side of the road, then overcorrected and lost control, traveling across four lanes before entering a ditch on the left side of the road.

Crews who responded say the car started to slide sideways, hitting a culvert pipe and flipping over and hitting a power pole roof first. The impact caused the pole to break and the car continued to roll over, hitting multiple trees.

Paramedics found Martinez, who was unrestrained in the vehicle, unconscious and displaying no signs of life, at which point the coroner responded.

The Martinez was the sole occupant of the vehicle.

This crash remains under investigation by the South Carolina Highway Patrol
