Man dies after falling through ice on pond while attempting to rescue his dog, police say
ELKHART COUNTY, Ind. (WNDU/Gray news) - A man in Indiana is dead after police say he fell through the ice on a pond while attempting to rescue his dog.
Police say it happened Monday at about 4 p.m. at a private pond in Elkhart County.
According to police, 69-year-old Phillip Hoover fell into the pond as he attempted to rescue his dog that had fallen through the ice.
Emergency crews recovered Hoover from the pond and took him to the hospital, where he later died. Police say his death was the result of an accidental drowning.
Hoover’s dog survived and was rescued. Police say it showed no apparent signs of injury.
The drowning remains under investigation by the Elkhart County Sheriff’s Office, the Indiana DNR and the Elkhart County Coroner’s Office.
