Highway Patrol investigates crash between garbage truck, train in Kingstree
Over 100 passengers and crew were onboard the train at the time of the accident
KINGSTREE, S.C. (WCSC) — The South Carolina Highway Patrol is investigating an accident involving a train and a garbage truck Wednesday morning.
The Williamsburg County Fire Department responded to the scene near 676 North Williamsburg County Highway, three miles north of Kingstree. Upon arrival, they saw a garbage truck pushed off the track and an Amtrak train was still upright down the track from the accident site.

The driver of the garbage truck, who was the sole occupant, was able to get out with minor injuries and was transported to a nearby hospital. No passengers or crew on the train suffered any injuries, according to Williamsburg County Fire Department Capt. William B. Horton III.
The train is deemed dysfunctional because of extensive damage, so buses are being sent to transport passengers to the Williamsburg County Recovery Center until further notice. Horton said the incident occurred at a private crossing since there were no crossarms or warning signals.
Drivers are urged to avoid the area until the scene is clear.
