HANAHAN, S.C. (WCSC) — The Hanahan City Council appointed one of its councilmen as the city’s new mayor pro tempore.

Councilman Adam Spurlock, of Hanahan, has served on the City Council since August 2020 following a special election and was re-elected in 2022. He currently serves as a pastor at Restoration Community Church in Hanahan.

Hanahan Mayor Christie Rainwater said she is grateful for Spurlock’s leadership in stepping into this role.

“Adam is exactly the kind of steady, community-rooted leader Hanahan needs at this moment,” Rainwater said. “We are grateful he has stepped into this role.”

“I am honored to serve the community that raised me. Hanahan is a resilient city, and I am committed to helping move us forward with integrity and purpose. I ask for the community’s continued trust as we navigate this together.”

Spurlock is replacing former Hanahan councilman and mayor pro tem Kevin Hedgepeth, who was charged with possession and production of child sexual abuse material last week. Further investigation revealed that he allegedly paid minors, with payments made to accounts believed to belong to child sex abuse victims and to accounts suspected of selling content.

He is also accused of communicating with children and directing them to make explicit pictures and videos to be sent to him for money.

Hedgpeth resigned from both positions following his arrest and waived his preliminary and detention hearing.

Rainwater confirmed that the city is working with the Berkeley County Election Commission to schedule a special election to fill the vacant council seat.
