FIRST ALERT: Significantly cooler next few days; rain chances rise late in the week
An Extreme Drought is ongoing across the Lowcountry!
CHARLESTON, S.C. (WCSC) — The big weather story locally today and tomorrow will be the return of much cooler air! Temperatures will “only” climb into the low-to-mid 80s this afternoon.
The Live 5 First Alert Weather team is forecasting a high of 84° in Charleston today. (That would be the coolest high temperature in Charleston since June 3rd!) Lowcountry beaches will be even cooler (and breezier) throughout the day with highs around 80°.
Unfortunately for beachgoers, sunshine will be in short supply today. A few passing showers are possible this morning, but more numerous, scattered showers (and rumbles) may develop during the afternoon.
Wednesday will also feature cooler temperatures than recent days. Expect highs in the mid 80s. Wednesday will be very muggy and quite breezy! A few hit-or-miss showers and rumbles will be possible, but the day does not look like a complete rainout.
Above-average temperatures in the low-to-mid 90s look to return by Thursday.
TROPICS: Over the last several days, the team has been watching a disorganized system drifting into the western Gulf. This area of interest is bringing rain to parts of Texas and Mexico this morning. There are indications that this system may drift into the northwestern Gulf today, where it may develop into a short-lived tropical system.
The first name on the 2026 Atlantic hurricane season list is Arthur. Whether or not the system ends up acquiring a name, it looks to bring flooding rain to parts of Texas, Louisiana, and Mississippi.
As far as its potential impacts to the Lowcountry, there is data to support this system drifting inland from the Gulf over the coming days. Some of this rich tropical moisture may bring needed-rain to our corner of the world Thursday into Friday. If this does come to fruition, some gusty winds may accompany this system. However, they would most likely be lower than tropical storm-force winds, which begin at 39 mph.
