Holiday Dogs Visit MUSC's Children's Hospital
CHARLESTON, SC (WCSC) -For one hour the atrium at MUSC'S Children's Hospital was transformed into quite the stage. Fourteen therapy dogs and their owners put on a show for about a dozen kids.
"Every holiday our dogs come in costume and parade through the unit," said Christine Messick, Manager of the Children's Hospital Volunteer Program.
These dogs came dressed for the occasion. Some arrived in sleds. Some weighed 153 pounds while others weighed just three. This year the dogs did more than just parade.
"The costumes and tricks are huge. We are about making things kid friendly," added Mesick.
Woody's been a therapy dog for about four years. A lot goes into training these dogs so they can spend time with children.
"You have to have a dog that is nice and gentle. They must get along with people and dogs. You can't be jumping on people all the time," said volunteer Mary Evans.
The affection these dogs give children, goes a long way.
"They boost their spirits, they are great for their heart. They are just great for their overall health and well being," added Carol Perkins of the Harry Barker Pet Company.
These therapy dog owners donate their time and money. Today Harry Barker pet company donated a thousand dollars to the pet therapy program. These dogs were more than happy to accept a little holiday help.
