Stratford To Retire Matt Wieters, Justin Smoak's Numbers
GOOSE CREEK, SC (WCSC) - Lowcountry natives Matt Wieters and Justin Smoak will be honored at their alma mater next week when Stratford High retires their jersey numbers at a ceremony on Monday night.
Both Wieters, entering his 7th season as a catcher for the Orioles, and Smoak, entering his 6th major league season after just signing with the Blue Jays, are scheduled to be at the event.
Wieters would go on to Georgia Tech after graduating from Stratford in 2004. He was the 5th overall pick of the 2007 by Baltimore and has hit .257 with 92 HR's and 346 RBI in his major league career.
Smoak would lead the Knights to a state title in 2005 and went on to spent 3 seasons at South Carolina. He was the 11th overall pick of the 2008 draft by the Texas Rangers. He was traded to the Seattle Mariners as part of a package for Cliff Lee in 2010. For his career Smoak has hit .224 with 74 HR's and 234 RBI.
