Postal worker flown to hospital after being attacked by dog, officials say
NEWBERRY, S.C. (WIS/Gray News) – A postal worker was flown to the hospital after being attacked by a dog while on the job.
According to an incident report from the Newberry County Sheriff’s Office, the postal worker delivered a package on Oct. 11 when she was attacked by a black and white pit bull after approaching the door of a home.
Documents also state the employee tried to get back into their work vehicle, but the dog followed them and continued attacking.
The sheriff’s office said officers from the Newberry Police Department arrived at the scene, spraying the dog and helping the worker after calling EMS.
The postal worker was flown to the hospital to be treated for several injuries sustained during the attack.
“She had injuries to her upper body and to her lower body. I guess if there’s anything that could be blessed, it’s that they didn’t get to her head,” Newberry County Sheriff Lee Foster said.
The dog was taken to the animal shelter for quarantine, with the owner’s cooperation.
According to authorities, the dog was wearing an electronic fence collar during the time of the attack to prevent it from leaving its property.
Right now, the owners of the dogs are not facing charges. Foster said both the city and the county have leash laws, but they only apply when a dog is on public property.
“Any situation like that, the homeowner is responsible for the animals, but I don’t know right now if it’s going to be any type of criminal responsibility. We are exploring that,” he said.
